During his years at Florida State, quarterback “Famous” Jameis Winston has become one of college sports’ most acclaimed athletes. It’s his behavior off of the gridiron that draws all the criticism—and with good reason.
The Soda Scam
In July of 2013, Winston was in the spotlight once again following a pit stop at a Tallahassee Burger King. The story goes that a BK employee called the police on the star QB after Winston refused to stop filling up his free water cup with soda from the fountain drink machine. No charges were filed, but he’ll probably think twice before stealing from The King again.
The Sex Scandal
Despite having a dream season in his freshman year at FSU, it was his off-the-field issues that became Winston’s biggest nightmare. Throughout much of the 2013 – 2014 college football season, the eventual Heisman Trophy winner and national champion was at the center of a rape controversy. Toward the end of 2012, a female FSU student filed charges accusing Winston of sexually assaulting her after a night at a campus bar. Following a year long investigation, the case was dropped due to what the prosecutors cited as lack of evidence. Winston was exonerated, but not before the damage to his reputation was already done.
The Crab Caper
In April of 2014, Winston got caught shoplifting $32 worth of seafood from a supermarket. As seen in surveillance footage, Winston ordered crab legs and crawfish from the deli, and after receiving his order, ducked out of the store without paying. When the cops (who must know Winston’s address by heart at this point) came calling, he insisted that he simply forgot to pay. For being absent-minded, he was hit with a civil citation, 20 hours of community service, and a brief suspension from the Florida State baseball team.
The Vulgar Outburst
In September of 2014, several FSU students witnessed Winston standing on a table in the student union screaming out the words, “F-ck her right in the pussy!” a phrase which had recently become a popular Internet meme. As a result of his public obscenity, he was suspended for the first half of the teams’ next game and blasted by his own coach. His character was once again questioned by every media outlet. When he starts making that NFL money, the first thing Winston needs to do is hire a babysitter for himself.
