The four honeys who make up Isyss (pronounced eye-sis, like the Egyptian goddess the girls resemble) may have some serious studio muscle behind them (Kevin “Shek’spere” Briggs, Tyrice Jones, and Chris Henderson, among others), but Quierra, LeTiecia, Lamyia, and Ardena want you to know that they’re no pre-fab, cookie-cutter girl group. They came together through the bonds of family and friendship (Ardena, though only two years older, is actually LeTiecia’s aunt!), not through contract negotiations and record company manipulation.
ARDENA: Sign: Aquarius
Age: 18
As far as Ardena’s concerned, when it comes to pure entertainment, no one even comes close to Michael Jackson, but she does admit to being influenced by Boyz II Men, Aaliyah, and Toni Braxton. Known as the scholar of the group, she attended Alexander Hamilton Performing Arts High School in her native Los Angeles.
What she looks for in a man: “I like a guy who’s intelligent and not intimidated by a smart woman. He has to be confident in himself and his abilities. There’s nothing wrong with going to the club, but I like to know that there are more facets to his personality.”
QUIERRA: Sign: Cancer
Age: 19
Quierra was church-bred and classically trained in music. She attended the Baltimore School for the Arts for three years before transferring to a similar conservatory in L.A. Her musical influences range from the Clark Sisters and Yolanda Adams to SWV and Jodeci.
What she looks for in a man: “I like a man who’s decisive. If I detect the slightest trace of
indecision, it’s over. My strength is always going to come through; his should too.”
LAMYIA: Sign: Libra
Age: 19
The quartet’s peacekeeper, Lamyia grew up listening to Prince, Janet, and Mariah. She moonlights as an aspiring actress (a passion she plans to pursue along with her singing career), with credits including roles on The Parkers, Judging Amy, and Popular.
What she looks for in a man: “Sensitivity is important to me. Of course, I like a strong man, but if he’s in touch with his sensitive side, I feel better about being with him.”
LETIECIA: Sign: Gemini
Age: 17
Though she’s the baby of the group, LeTiecia’s already an accomplished model. This native Angelina has strutted her stuff on the runway and appeared in Vibe and various teen magazines. Her class clown
personality masks a sensitivity she developed from growing up with her grandmother, who
instilled in her a love of the Temptations, the Four Tops, and Stevie Wonder.
What she looks for in a man:
“A sense of humor is key. I’m always joking around, but I love a man who can make me laugh. I also love a nice smile! I really want to see what’s inside.”
