Who knew? Memphis’ Three 6 Mafia has been putting in work for so long, the whole world should know their names. But despite all their success (three gold albums and one platinum), many still don’t even know the half. SMOOTH recently had a sitdown with three of the four members of the group (Lord Emphasis had a prior engagement). DJ Paul broke down the method to the Mafia’s madness, while Juicy Jay tried to hold down his breakfast and manage a hangover from the previous evening’s industry party. And even though Crunchy Black kept his eyes shaded, you could still tell that he was faded. Just another day at the office for these
hip-hop businessmen, who stay fly and focused
as only they can.
You’re coming off your fourth major release, The Most Known Unknown. How does the album compare to your previous releases?
Juicy Jay: So far, it’s doing great. It went certified gold in five weeks, so I think it’s doing damn good for us.
DJ Paul: All of our albums went at least gold, but our best as far as sales was When the Smoke Clears.
That one went platinum. But we’re excited about this one. I think this joint will do better than When the Smoke Clears.
Why did you choose that title?
DJ Paul: It’s self-explanatory. Three 6 Mafia is known, but we’re also unknown. We got a lot of hits and sold a lot of records, but we don’t get a lot of press.
Why do you think that is?
DJ Paul: I don’t know, man. Other groups must have somebody in their corner who’s keeping them out there. Maybe they’re giving the right people head.
I don’t know.
